The Mamariga tunnel entered into service in 1990 and was built according to the safety standards present at that time.
However, the technical instructions for safety and operation of road tunnels in Bizkaia have changed. Therefore, it has been necessary to draw up the project and subsequently execute the works, both in the Port direction tube and in the A-8 direction tube, related to the existing Non-Conformities in these tunnels according to the Bizkaia Tunnel Safety Standard.
To this end, a series of modifications are defined to be carried out in these tunnels in aspects related to the layout, waterproofing and drainage, as well as in the rest of the basic infrastructure (pavements, structural lining, aesthetics, safety barriers, drainage) and safety infrastructure (lighting, signaling, installations, fire protection, public address system, CCTV, etc.).
The projected works resolve to a large extent the situations of insecurity that could arise and adapt the facilities to the regulations currently in force.
This highway is of great importance as it is the main access to the Port of Bilbao and the IMD, and also due to the high number of heavy vehicles and special transports that travel along it.
For this reason, it was proposed to reduce the construction time, accelerating the works inside the tubes and providing permanent traffic management during the execution of the works, minimizing the impact on the traffic on the highway.
